About

Greens Gunyah Museum is situated in the main street of Lockhart. Run by the Lockhart & District Historical Society, this award winning museum was established in 1971 and is home to the Doris Golder Wool Art Gallery.

There is a wealth of material in the Museum collection, with an extensive range of historical artefacts, photography and machinery on display, all with their own story to tell. Highlights include the extensive Tim Fischer Exhibition, the Jackson Strong Story, old town business histories and vintage town footage.

Of significant note is the Brookong Station collection; a nationally important story illustrating changes in land tenure, land use and the character of rural settlements from the first settlements in the 1840s through to the 20th Century.

The famous Shearer's Riot at Brookong Station in 1888 was the catalyst for the subsequent Shearer's Strike in Queensland, and played an important role in the birth of the NSW Labor Party. The Brookong Shearer's Strike was also significant in the development of the Australian Worker's Union.

The renowned Doris Golder Wool Art Gallery, a fabulous collection of layered "Wool Art" by local artist Doris Golder is on permanent display in the Museum. A unique and fascinating art form consisting of portraits and landscapes constructed in natural coloured fleece wool, the collection includes portraits of notable Australians, as well as local landscapes and animals.

For visitors to the region, Greens Gunyah Museum hosts the Lockhart Shire Visitor Information Outlet, with a wide range of maps and brochures available. Free wifi is also available for visitors use.
